What Is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization vs. SEO and AEO
How AI answers choose the pages they cite, and what to layer on top of the SEO you already have.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of getting AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to cite your content as evidence when they compose an answer. Where SEO targets link rankings and AEO targets the direct-answer snippet, GEO targets the citation inside the AI's answer. In Princeton's GEO study, adding statistics, sources and quotations alone lifted visibility in generative engines by up to about 40%.

What is GEO?
The habit of typing a few words into a search box and opening blue links one at a time is fading. Buyers now hand the whole question to an AI, read the single paragraph that comes back, and decide. If your brand isn't in that paragraph, there is no click left to win.
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: the practice of getting engines that synthesize answers, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Naver's AI Briefing, to pick your content as the evidence behind the answer they write.
The label is new; the discipline isn't. SEO studied how a search engine decides which links to rank. GEO studies which sentences a language model reaches for when it assembles an answer.
How do SEO, AEO and GEO differ?
The three aren't rivals; they're layers. SEO is the foundation: crawling, indexing, ranking. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) sits on top of it and shapes blocks that answer a question outright. GEO sits above both and places the evidence an AI will cite when it synthesizes a response.
That's why bolting GEO onto a site with a cracked foundation is the wrong order. A page that can't be crawled can't be read by an AI either, and a URL stuck in Search Console's indexing errors will not appear in any engine's answer.

Which pages does AI cite?
Princeton researchers tested this directly in their 2023 GEO paper, editing the same pages in different ways and measuring visibility in generative engines. Versions that added statistics, cited sources and included quotations gained up to roughly 40% in visibility. Versions stuffed with repeated keywords scored below the untouched original.
What we see in the field points the same way. Comparison pieces ('A vs B') and definition pages ('What is X') take the largest share of AI citations, and most cited sentences sit within the first 30% of the page. Bury the conclusion at the bottom and the engine truncates before it gets there.
What are GEO's limits?
Measurement comes first. There's no standard tool to check daily the way you check rankings, and the same question returns different answers depending on the moment and the user. The only way to track citation rate is to fix a set of questions and run them by hand on a schedule.
Being cited doesn't mean being clicked. When the AI finishes the answer itself, the reader never opens the link. So GEO is better judged by brand mentions, branded-search trends and the conversion rate of AI-referred sessions in GA4 than by session counts.
Where should you start?
Not with a new site. Start by fixing the top 30% of the pages you already have. A question-style heading, a two- or three-sentence definition beneath it, one paragraph with real numbers and one comparison table gets you halfway to citation-ready.
Then comes evidence density: a source link for every claim, a year next to every statistic and a visible last-updated date. FAQ rich results left Google Search in May 2026, but FAQ markup still helps AI systems extract question-and-answer pairs.
GEO starter checklist
- Check Search Console for excluded URLs first; the foundation layer comes before anything else
- Put a definition and a direct-answer paragraph above the fold on 5 to 10 key pages
- Build every comparison as a real HTML table so axes and values are quoted intact
- A source link per claim, a year per statistic, an update date per page
- Once a month, run 20 target questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews and log who gets cited
Frequently Asked Questions
- Aren't AEO and GEO just two names for the same thing?
- They overlap heavily: both demand a structure that answers the question outright. The difference is the target surface. AEO aims at a single snippet slot inside the search results; GEO aims at a citation inside an answer the AI stitched together from several sources. That's why GEO adds a second requirement beyond the direct answer: evidence density, meaning sources, statistics and quotations.
- What does it cost, and when does it start working?
- If you're editing existing pages there's no media spend; the cost is editorial hours. But it doesn't move in days the way paid search does. In the range we see in practice, it typically takes 4 to 12 weeks before an engine re-reads a page and reflects it in answers, and even when citation rates rise, clicks often don't rise in step.
- Does GEO matter for Naver?
- Yes. Naver places AI Briefing inside its integrated search and attaches source documents beneath the answer. Since a large share of Korean B2B queries start on Naver, structured pages that land in Smart Blocks and a clean index in Naver Search Advisor are the starting point for GEO in Korea. Manage it separately from English pages aimed at global engines.
- Will an llms.txt file get us picked up faster?
- Google has said it doesn't use llms.txt, and no other major engine has publicly confirmed adopting it. It costs almost nothing, so leaving one in place does no harm, but it's a low priority. The same hour is better spent checking that robots.txt isn't blocking AI crawlers such as GPTBot or PerplexityBot.
- How do we know citations turn into revenue?
- In GA4, group sessions whose referrer is chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar domains, and read their conversion rate alongside branded-search trends in Search Console. AI-referred traffic is typically small in volume but converts at a higher rate per session than general organic, so judge it by conversions rather than session counts or you'll underrate it.
